Opportunities & Challenges”

Background:

Nepal currently is going through major social and political transformation. The people's movement of 2006 (2062/63 BS) has resulted in the fall of 238 year- old dictatorial Shah Regime,

Adoption of an interim constitution & Constitution Making Process through Constitutional Assembly is not success and the country is passing through a transition period leading to a prosperous and sovereign Nepal. At present, substantial segment of the populace is found to be overwhelmed by the aspirations of federal democratic republic feature of the country. It has become very important for the engineering community to demonstrate its staunch support for the conception and strengthen it through professional inputs that will pave the way towards building new Nepal. This national seminar titled "Cooperatives in Mini/Small Hydropower Development: opportunities & Challenges" is one of the NECCAL-WECAN Joint series of brainstorming that will be organized in due course of time with revitalized participation of the Cooperative Community and engineering community.

 

Objectives and Themes of National Seminar

The main objective of the National Seminar is to identify the challenges and opportunities of cooperatives for development of Mini/Small Hydropower Development in Nepal. Other objectives are:

·         To interact among the Cooperatives, Gos, Consultant and INGOs for development of Mini/Small Hydropower.

·         To enhance the Capability of Cooperatives for development of Cooperatives.

 

 

Specific objectives and theme of the National Seminar are:

 

1. An overview of the existing Mini/Small Hydropower Development & Management, in the Mountain, hills and terai of Nepal. How best management system through cooperatives can bring in development of significant numbers of Mini/Small hydropower projects in Nepal. How these Hydropower are going to improve the living conditions of rural population. Identify the best mechanism for people’s investment in hydropower sector and to identify the policy inadequacy prevailing in the country which can be brought into the attention of the policy refinements. How can we make Hydropower more community friendly to get equitable benefit to our Nepali people?

 

2. Fixing the capacity requirement of in the area of Hydro Power Development, with the perspectives of in country capacities, cooperatives, consulting companies of Hydropower Projects and with much emphasis on maintenance aspects to make the projects sustainable. How can we can more prosperous, economically sound Nepal taking into account the high economic growth rate in our both the neighboring countries China and India.

Nepal Electric Central Cooperative Association Limited (NECCAL):

 

Since its establishment (2067 BS / 2020 AD), NECCAL has serviced the Rural community Electrification by own members Electric Cooperative Institutions. It has continuously strived for national development through cooperative enterprises contribution. NECCAL follow-up always the international principles of cooperative and its important values and professional values. NECCAL encouraging the saving credit programme, technical educational programmes, training programmes, poverty alleviation programme, youth self-employment programme and interactions to promoting the socio-economic development within the cooperative movement for a better human society in our rural Nepal. NECCAL want to an effective national movement against the energy crises. NECCAL going to including this movement all concern cooperative institutions, concern governmental sectors and concern private sectors. NECCAL’s strategic vision to  develop the mini and small hydropower partnership with local cooperative / community and public institutions, private companies and local authorities / governance, generate in hilly and mountain districts, where it possible to connect the national grid of NEA. Now, NECCAL stands out as the common organization that provides the platform for realizing the hope and dignity of the rural area’s electric cooperatives of mini and small hydropower to generate local cooperative and community based organization in the rural area of Nepal.

Since its establishment, WECAN has embraced the Consulting community and has continuously strived for national development through professional contribution, , fostering professional values, encouraging interactions, promoting technological development within the engineering fraternity and for fostering international relations with similar associations in the region and worldwide.
